About 3,100 people were evacuated and almost 300 have been injured after the eruption, according to the country's disaster agency.
Searing flows of ash mixed with water and debris gushed down the volcano's flanks, blocking roads and burning homes.
"The operation command made a decision to evacuate all the rescuers who were around the Alotenango volcano, we'll have to see if we can continue the search later", Altuve exlplained to euronews.
The eruption is the second major one this year from the peak, following another that subsided at the beginning of February after sending ash towering 1.7 kilometers into the sky.
The eruption showered sand and ash on coffee plants across as much as 6,890 acres (2,788 hectares), including close to the volcano's cone, causing an estimated loss of 0.91 percent of Guatemala's coffee production, the country's national coffee association said. Most of the dead and injured were from the town of El Rodeo, where lava flow overtook structures.

La Aurora airport in the country's capital of Guatemala City, was reportedly closed on Sunday due to the eruption, according to reports citing the Guatemalan Coordinating Agency for Disaster Reduction (CONRED).
