Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi insisted he was "just another player" despite being considered among the all-time greats.

Argentina has called off a controversial World Cup warmup match against Israel following protests by pro-Palestinian groups.

"The Embassy of Israel regrets to communicate the suspension of the match between Israel and Argentina", a statement said, referring to "threats and provocations" against Argentina captain Messi.

Local media had reported earlier Tuesday that the game was set to be scrapped, depriving Messi and his team-mates of a final warm-up game before they open their World Cup campaign in Russian Federation.

A senior source at Argentina's Football Federation, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the game had been called off.

"I don't consider myself the best, I think I am just another player", he says.

Reports said that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had called Argentinian president Mauricio Macri to ask him to persuade the team not to cancel their visit.

US TRADE WAR ramps up
It's not necessarily China or the traditional sort of dumpers that you'd associate with negative behaviour. This kind of punch-counterpunch makes Canadians like Michael Seamen really nervous.

"This match has become a political tool", Rajoub said in Arabic.

Palestinians hailed the cancellation as a victory.

"But we have a good group of players and the Argentine team is always going to be a candidate to win, it doesn't matter how we get there. We always aim to win and we will try to go slowly but strongly to advance in the competition", Messi added.

It has also been claimed that several Argentina players were uneasy about travelling to Israel for the game before its cancellation.

Israel lays claim to the whole Jerusalem al-Quds, but the worldwide community views the city's eastern sector as an occupied territory and Palestinians consider it as the capital of their future state.

"I stressed that the game, in the wake of the killing of the Palestinians in Gaza and the relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, sends a unsafe message to the Israeli government that the world ignores its gross human rights violations".

As part of the campaign, Mohammed Khalil, a Palestinian footballer, directed a message toward Argentina's beloved forward Lionel Messi. Stating it's impossible to enjoy games when millions of Palestinians don't enjoy "human rights" Odeh said that "there is only one way to win, ending the occupation and having a real peace treaty, which is still possible".
