Voters to decide state, federal, local races in CA primary

Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom speaks at a campaign rally in Burbank Calif

They and other candidates running unopposed advanced to the November 6 general election.

Polls have begun closing in the eastern half of the United States as eight states hold primaries ahead of the November midterm elections.

Coverage will be anchored by Tom Llamas, Kayna Whitworth and ABC News Political Director Rick Klein from California, with live reports from other primary states.

In a primary with unpredictable outcomes and complicated political calculus, California voters on Tuesday winnowed down crowded ballots in high-stakes contests to two candidates - regardless of political party - to advance to the general election in November.

Tuesday's drama extends into South Dakota, where Rep. Kristi Noem's bid to become the state GOP's first female nominee for governor has opened the state's only House seat.

LeeEsther Turner, 50, a registered Democrat, said she voted for John Chiang, a Democrat and current state treasurer.

Much of Tuesday's focus was on California, however. But while he has risen in the ranks of the party both in New Jersey and in Washington, his performance on Tuesday night hardly looked like that of an entrenched incumbent.

In the Albuquerque-area First Congressional District Democratic primary, Pat Davis complicated an already complex, three-way race for first when he dropped out last week and endorsed opponent Deb Haaland. Before then, Democrats must avoid self-inflicted wounds in Tuesday's so-called jungle primaries that feature a swarm of candidates who could cannibalize their own party's chances.

Edgar Mito, a 77-year-old retired truck loader in Los Angeles who is a registered Democrat, voted for state Treasurer John Chiang for governor and for U.S. Sen.

There were places for Sane's City team-mate Ilkay Gundogan , Arsenal's Mesut Ozil and Chelsea's Antonio Rudiger . Sane impressed throughout the season, having scored 10 goals and provided 15 assists in 28 league appearances.

In the 11th District, Republican U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen's decision to retire after 12 terms set up five-way Democratic and Republican primaries. She will face Mike Rogers, who is unopposed for the Republican nomination, but the deep-red district is highly unlikely to fall into Democratic hands.

"I still consider myself an independent, but I just won't vote Republican because of what's going on", she said.

Democrats have a 10-percentage point voter-registration advantage in the two-county district but Nguyen displayed her superior campaigning skills when she won by 16-percentage points over Democratic former Assemblyman Jose Solorio in 2014.

On the other side, Democratic strategists expect to see new evidence of an anti-Trump backlash, particularly in suburban districts across New Jersey and California, where many voters have soured on the Republican president. Jerry Brown and challengers to Sen.

Wicker said in a recent fundraising appeal that he wants to help the president "enact his America-first policies". Will it make a difference? Diane Feinstein is running for another term.

Iowa House District 57 seat: Democrats Nancy Fett and Leo Gansen face off for seat now held by Republican Iowa Rep. Shannon Lundgren, who is running for re-election. While Democrats need only a net total of two seats to take command of the Senate, Democratic senators must defend a bevy of seats in rural states such as Indiana, Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia that supported Trump two years ago.

. On the Republican side, pharmaceutical executive Bob Hugin has poured $7.5 million into his campaign.

In Montana, Republicans will pick a candidate to take on Democratic Sen.
