President Trump Argues There's No Alternative to Family Separation Policy

As President Donald Trump spoke before the National Federation of Independent Businesses on Tuesday, he continued on his path of blaming Congressional Democrats for his administration's family-dividing policies on America's southern border. Concretely, this means that no child may be separated except upon a judge's order, if a child welfare expert determines that the child is being abused or neglected, or if the CBP officer in charge determines that the child is at risk of trafficking or abuse.

Democrats, meanwhile, insisted that no legislation was necessary to address the crisis ― even as all members of their caucus had already endorsed a bill to do so ― because Trump could reverse the policy by himself if he wanted to.

GOP lawmakers added those provisions in at the last minute to try to boost prospects for their bill, which aims to grant illegal immigrant "Dreamers" a pathway to citizenship while also building President Trump's border wall and curtailing the chain of family migration.

Before, if you were caught crossing the border illegally and you had children with you, you might not have gone to jail.

At least 2,300 of these youngsters have been separated from their parents since April, when President Donald Trump's administration launched its "zero tolerance" immigration policy. Cruz, is created to simultaneously stop family separation and address some of the concerns that prompted the Trump administration's zero tolerance policy. If separations occur, Homeland Security would have to provide clear guidelines for how parents can contact their kids.

"Unacceptable additions have bogged down every piece of legislation we've done", he said.

"Dems' Keep Families Together Act is better called the Child Trafficking Encouragement Act", tweeted Cotton.

"We do not share the same model of civilization, clearly we don't share certain values", Benjamin Griveaux told France 2 television.

Mexico stunned defending champions Germany in their opening game at the 2018 World Cup on Sunday, upsetting the powerhouse team. In 2006, he was once again a full-time starter, scoring Mexico's only goal in a loss to Argentina in the round of 16.

Trump's meeting at the Capitol comes as lawmakers in both parties are up in arms after days of news reports showing images of children being held at border facilities in cages and an audio recording of a young child pleading for his "Papa". Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the tape.

A new "zero tolerance" policy from the Trump administration has led to a spike in children being separated from their parents at the border as they seek entry.

Both bills seemed to be longshots.

The House is set to vote later in the week on two immigration bills, including provisions that would curb the separation of children from their parents at the border. Details were still in flux.

Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, teared up as he pleaded with Republicans on the panel to end what he called "internment camps".

In the Senate, Republican Senator Ted Cruz, who ran unsuccessfully against Trump in 2016 for their party's presidential nomination, said he would introduce legislation this week to halt family separations.

"The president is trying set this trap in the public mind that somehow there is a law requiring him to do this and Congress can undo it", said Senator Chris Van Hollen, who visited a detention centre in Brownsville, Texas, over the weekend. The church said the move was approved by 600 of its clergy and laity. The Daily Beast fact-checked his statements by highlighting there were no laws that required family separation and that criminal prosecutions of the undocumented were deemed criminal by the Trump administration.

Border crossings briefly dropped after Trump took office in January 2017, but have since risen to levels seen during the administration of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama.
