Ronaldo’s landmark goal for Portugal eliminates Morocco

Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo became Europe's all-time leading worldwide scorer with 85 goals when he headed in Portugal's opening strike in their World Cup Group B match against Morocco today.

Africa's performance at this year's world cup has not been impressive.

Morocco was eliminated, thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo's only goal in the first-half which saw the Real Madrid ace overtake Ferenc Puskas as the record European global goalscorer.

The second-half was a carbon copy of the first.

Prior to this World Cup, Hungarian forward Ferenc Puskas held the record for the most senior worldwide goals for a European nation with 84 goals between 1945 and 1956.

Morocco, who had a real go at the Luzhniki Stadium but failed to convert their chances, are pointless having also lost 1-0 to Iran and can not progress to the second round.

It was his 85th worldwide goal, taking him beyond Hungarian Ferenc Puskas's European record, with only Iran's Ali Daei ahead of him on 109.

Portugal will tackle Iran in their final group game on June 25 in Saransk.

Despite their battling display, Morocco will rue the unforgivable defending that made all their subsequent good work irrelevant.

The Real Madrid forward threatened a second soon after, swivelling on the edge of the area and scuffing just wide after a powerful run from left-back Raphael Guerreiro.

Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio made a fantastic diving low save to touch clear Younes Belhanda's sharp header but Medhi Benatia's blazed effort over the bar was more typical of their finishing from half-a-dozen reasonable chances and they paid the ultimate price for their lack of a proven goalscorer. The Portuguese will face Iran in their final match on Monday in Saransk.

For Portugal, a win today puts them in a good shape for qualification to the next round whilst Morocco must win today in order not to suffer the same fate as Egypt who virtually got kicked out yesterday.

The result left Spain joint top of their group with Portugal on four points, but Iran close behind on three going into the third and final set of games.
