Trump brushes off immigration bill's defeat

A Republican "compromise" bill reforming USA immigration law failed spectacularly in Congress on Wednesday, dealing a blow to President Donald Trump's efforts to resolve a simmering border crisis that has seen thousands of migrant families separated.

Children who cross the U.S. -Mexico border with their parents or legal guardians would no longer be separated from their parents when the adults are taken into custody by the Department of Homeland Security for the misdemeanor crime of crossing the border illegally.

The bill was killed 301-121, with almost half of Republicans opposing the measure.

That's what the Congressman said last week, before Republicans were unable to pass two immigration bills in the GOP-controlled U.S. House of Representatives. Another House bill on immigration, seen as taking a more hardline stance, failed last week.

Democrats and centrist Republicans from swing districts say the GOP could suffer because the party, steered by Trump's anti-immigrant harangues, could be alienating pivotal moderate voters.

Despite the President demanding - via Twitter - that House Republicans pass the "strong but fair" immigration bill, the House Republicans did not, in fact, pass the muscley but attractive immigration bill.

The U.S. House rejected a second immigration bill Wednesday, despite being broader in scope and having last-minute support from President Trump.

The Alto Republican voted against the bill. The Freedom Caucus aide said leadership would face "humiliation" if the compromise bill attracted fewer votes than the more conservative legislation - a scenario that ultimately played out when the compromise bill was defeated 121-301. House Republican leaders initially planned to vote on both measures the same day, but postponed the vote in hopes of shoring up support.

Since Trump initiated his “zero tolerance” policy of detaining everyone who enters the US illegally, more than 2,000 immigrant children have been separated from their parents.

His backing of the bill was a complete reversal from his stance on Friday, when he urged Republicans to call off immigration negotiations until after the midterm elections.

The Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2018 (HR 6136) establishes a new, merit-based green card programme - without increasing legal immigration - based on applicants earning points for skills, education, vocational training, work experience, English language proficiency, and military service, according to Goodlatte. Ryan told reporters Thursday that the goal of voting on the legislation was to avoid a different kind of insurrection, a procedural tool known as a "discharge petition" that would force votes on a different set of four polarized immigration bills.

Rep. Carlos Curbelo, who led the effort alongside Denham, slammed his conservative colleagues who voted to maintain the status quo's broken immigration system, summing up their opposition as a preference for the "petty politics of immigration".

The rejection comes after President Donald Trump attempted to rally support of the bill after he earlier sent mixed signals about whether he fully endorses the bill.

The bill would have required children to be released after 20 days, still apart from parents who continued to be detained. After an outcry from the public and lawmakers, Trump last week signed an executive order to end the separations but said Congress needs to change the law.

That's also the opposite of what Democrats want for a trade-off on family separation. "Today we moved the ball forward", Denham said. "There was no Democrats involved, they never reached out across the aisle so we could have had some effect of trying to make this bill better".
