USA soldier killed, 2 wounded in apparent insider attack in Afghanistan

A USA service member was killed, and two others were wounded in an apparent insider attack in southern Afghanistan Saturday, according to the NATO-led coalition's Resolute Support mission.

NATO's training and assistance mission in Afghanistan, Resolute Support, said in a statementthat the two US service members injured in the July 7 incident were in stable condition and that an investigation was under way.

No further details have been given regarding the incident and exact location where the attack took place but North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said the incident is under investigation.

This is the third combat fatality in Afghanistan this year.

The Pentagon has identified the soldier killed in an apparent insider attack Saturday in Afghanistan as Army Cpl. It added thatthe name of the deceased service member was being withheld until next of kin is notified.

The Taliban released a statement praising an Afghan soldier for carrying out the attack, without taking credit for it themselves.

In the meantime, Afghan officials have told AFP that the incident has taken place in southern Uruzgan province of Afghanistan.

In the April 30 incident, Army Spec. Gabriel D. Conde, 22, was shot by enemy fighters in a firefight in Kapisa province while providing security for U.S. Special Operations troops. The specially trained unit's 800 members are meant to advise Afghan forces in small teams, embedding more closely with their Afghan partners than conventional units.
