Washington and Pyongyang get down to 'nitty gritty' in nuclear talks

It is Mr Pompeo's third trip to Pyongyang

While Pompeo offered a relatively positive assessment of his meetings, North Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the us betrayed the spirit of last month's summit between President Trump and Kim by making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on "CVID", or the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.

Speaking at a news conference in Tokyo with his Japanese and South Korean Pompeo responded directly to North Korea's Foreign Ministry's comment, after his two-day trip to Pyongyang, that the USA employed a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization".

The North's relatively harsh tone contrasts somewhat with what Pompeo said after holding talks with Kim Yong-chol, a close aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, for two straight days from Friday, though he also admitted that there was "more work to be done".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has delivered a dose of harsh reality to Donald Trump, bashing hopes for a quick denuclearization deal in a pointed rebuke to the president's top envoy while accusing the US of making "gangster-like" demands.

In addition to demanding that North Korea agree to the complete, verifiable and irreversible abandonment of its nuclear weapons and missile programs, Abe has made the return of any abductees still in North Korea or a full disclosure of their fates a condition for providing any major economic assistance.

"First, let's get a wrap up of Secretary Pompeo's meeting in Pyongyang, and what we know so far".

According to USA media reports, Pompeo did not meet Kim during the visit, unlike his previous trips during which he had met with the DPRK's top leader. Kim ended Pompeo's visit on a positive note, telling the top United States diplomat just before he boarded his plane, "We will produce an outcome, results".

Mr Trump in turn offered security guarantees to Pyongyang and pledged a halt to large-scale military drills with South Korea.

Steely Uruguay ready for Mbappe-fired France

And in a pointed message to North Korea, Graham said the U.S. has more powerful weapons than sanctions to keep the rogue regime in line - if necessary.

As he departed Pyongyang, Pompeo said he spent "a good deal of time" discussing a denuclearisation timeline and the declaration of North Korea's nuclear and missile facilities.

Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, dictator Kim Jong Un's top adviser and North Korea's former spy chief, exchanged pleasantries before the second meeting between the two countries.

His optimism, however, came in marked contrast to how the North perceived the talks, which had been the highest-level negotiations since the June 12 summit.

Speaking as Pompeo arrived in Tokyo, Nauert told reporters that the only thing Pompeo had left in Pyongyang was a letter to the North Korean leader from President Donald Trump.

Skepticism has grown over how and whether North Korea will dismantle its nuclear weapons program amid USA media reports that the country has continued to develop nuclear facilities.

"Chairman Kim is. still committed" to that goal, Pompeo said, and he reiterated that Trump was "committed to a brighter future for North Korea". "So why wouldn't Kim Jong Un dig in his heels with Pompeo and press his advantage?"

'Kim can afford to play hardball because it's clear to him that Trump, who has already told Americans they can sleep soundly because the threat is now over, badly wants a deal, ' Russel said.
