History made at British Open by Italy's Molinari

Spieth's title defense at British Open ends without a bang

Tiger Woods rolled back the years in thrilling fashion to revive hopes of a 15th major title as the 147th Open Championship exploded into life.

Molinari shot a 2-under-par 69 to finish at 8 under for the tournament, becoming the first Italian to win one of the four major tournaments in men's golf.

Behind Molinari, there was a four-way tie for second place, among McIlroy, Kevin Kisner, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele.

The American could get the battle with Tiger Woods he has always visioned with the 14-time major victor lurking ominously among the chasing pack after a thrilling day of low scoring at a defenceless Carnoustie. Masters champion Patrick Reed almost went home after making double bogey on No. 15 and bogey on 16, but parred the final two finishing holes to make the cut on the number at 3-over-par.

Tiger Woods is in the outright lead of the British Open after a stunning turnaround at Carnoustie.

Other top players weren't as fortunate. I know he made a couple of putts here and there for par, but to get it to where it was basically kick-in from some of the spots he put himself, that was impressive.

Rose, who had made the cut thanks to a birdie on the 18th hole on Friday, was the leader in the clubhouse for a while.

One of the house rules: victor pays for the flight home, though not everyone will be on the same plane this year with players headed in too many different directions. Perez was tied for the lead until he hit into a bunker on the 18th hole and took bogey. Another American Kevin Chappell (67) is two shots off the lead with Italy's Francesco Molinari (65) on six under alone in fifth. "It was a little bit louder probably when he did that than today was", Schauffele said.

"I didn't want to be too far back if the guys got to 10-under par today".

Jordan Spieth, tied for the lead in his bid to go back-to-back in the British Open, failed to make a single birdie and shot 76, his highest score Sunday in a major.

Twelve players were separated by four shots, a group that includes Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Zach Johnson.

When they asked if he had any idea why police wanted to talk to him, Miller responded "Ashley Tinsley", the affidavit said. He had choked Tinsley to death after raping her and after she died he had sex with the deceased body before discarding it.

Spieth bogeyed No. 5 then made double-bogey at the sixth hole after taking a drop then three-putting. "I would imagine it's going to be more of a grind all day", he said of the final round.

For 20 minutes on a warm Saturday afternoon at the British Open, Tiger Woods's name was back atop a leaderboard at a major championship and Carnoustie was buzzing.

"The way Francesco played today was lovely", said Woods.

"I think it will take a long time for this to sink in". "Emotionally draining", was his description for the course, the final four holes of which have damaged him every day.

After two underwhelming even-par rounds, Woods needed something special in the 3rd round at Carnoustie and he was on course for just that after reaching the 16th hole at 6 under for a tournament he has won 3 times.

Rose finished almost three hours before the leaders teed off, and was at 4 under for the tournament, two shots off the lead held by Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner.

The 42-year-old's much anticipated return to The Open after a two-year hiatus had been a bit of a damp squib on the first two days at Carnoustie.

Jordan Spieth was tied for the lead at Carnoustie as he tries to become the first repeat victor in 10 years at the British Open.

"At the beginning of the year, if they'd have said "you're playing The Open Championship", I would have said I'd be very lucky to do that".

"Whether I shot 69 or 73 today, it wouldn't have been heartbreaking".

By contrast, Molinari gained his first shot of the day at the par-five 14th and, just as crucially, holed clutch par putts on the 15th and 16th.
