Calls for fresh elections in Pakistan amid rigging claims; United States criticizes 'flaws'

Elections agency says Imran Khan won Pakistan's election, but needs a coalition

Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has urged Pakistan's soon-to-be prime minister Imran Khan to take "bold and positive" calls like the ones he had taken on the cricket field during his time as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team.

In an interview with CNBC television on July 30, Pompeo said the United States looked forward to engagement with the government of Pakistan's expected new prime minister, Imran Khan, but said there is "no rationale" for a bailout that pays off Chinese loans to Pakistan.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesman Fawad Chaudhry said after getting the backing of other political parties, as well as seats reserved for minorities and women, Khan's party was in a position to "comfortably" form the federal government. In Pakistan there are many smaller parties and independents, holding around 50 assembly seats.

The preliminary official results of the July 25 elections for the Pakistan parliament have now been announced.

According to the results, the PTI has bagged 116 general seats 22 short of simple majority whereas the PML-N and PPP have won 64 and 43 seats, respectively. Opposition parties slammed the outcome, but a European Union monitoring team said despite problems, "over all the election results are credible". He said, "We neither offered them money nor positions".

All indicators suggest the Pakistan Tehrek-e-Insaf's government - which is likely to take oath next month - will immediately have to approach the IMF for what would be the country's 13th bailout from the fund.

The development of strong democratic and civilian institutions of governance and a vibrant civil society is critical to Pakistan's long-term stability and prosperity, US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said in the first official US statement since the general elections in Pakistan on Wednesday.

However, some party leaders oppose this decision, suggesting the prime minister-in-waiting not to give up Lahore seat because they believe it may be hard for the party to win it back. "Right now, it is one-sided where India is constantly just blaming us".

"But, when you have so much of animosity and so much of infiltration was happening, I think it is very hard for talks to take place". The defeat of several stalwarts of both the PML-N and the PPP, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the son of Benazir Bhutto and Co-Chairman of the PPP, in their own strongholds has also been attributed to the military's interference in the electoral process.

"If India's leadership is ready, we are ready to improve ties with India".

On the other hand, Imran said in a post-election press conference that he wanted a "balanced relation" with the US.
