Iran's parliament summons Rouhani as economy falters under US pressures

Donald Trump

Head of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Kamal Kharazi, said Tehran saw no value in U.S. President, Donald Trump's offer to meet Iranian president for talks without preconditions.

"With current America and these policies, there will definitely not be the possibility of dialogue and engagement, and the United States has shown that it is totally unreliable", Qassemi said.

"Mr Trump! Iran is not North Korea to accept your offer for a meeting", Guards commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari was quoted as saying by Fars News agency.

Mr Trump made the suggestion in response to a question from a reporter at the White House on Monday.

There are many similar examples; what they all have in common is that the United States usually believes that it is too strong to ever offer Tehran any concessions and doing so would ultimately undermine America's standing.

"Trump understands that he does not have the capacity to wage war with Iran, but due to historic mistrust, diplomatic ties have been destroyed", said Falahatpisheh, adding that this left no choice but to work towards reducing tensions. "I'll meet", Trump said at a joint press conference with Italy's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Secondly, the US administration is speaking from both sides of its mouth: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, for instance, has insisted that certain criteria be met before Trump and Rouhani could meet, completely contradicting Trump's unconditional offers for a chat.

Hours before Trump's statement, Iran's foreign ministry ruled out the possibility of negotiations with the US government over the enduring bilateral problems.

Iran is less isolated than North Korea and less amenable to a media spectacle that doesn't restore the benefits Iran lost.

USA trade talk: what has been agreed to
Changes in global soybean trade prompted by China's retaliation against Trump's tariffs may be playing the most significant role. General Motors slashed its outlook, and shares of Ford Motor Co. and auto parts companies have fallen.

"I ended the Iran deal". Roughly one year ago, Bolton - not yet serving in his current post - unveiled a detailed plan on how the U.S. should leave the Iran nuclear deal.

The worldwide nuclear agreement forced Iran to curtail its uranium enrichment capacity to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons, and imposed stringent verification processes, in exchange for relief on crippling sanctions.

That call was part of the lengthy negotiations toward the multinational nuclear deal reached with Iran in 2015 - which Trump pulled out of earlier this year.

Washington aims to force Tehran to end its nuclear programme and its support of militant groups in the Middle East, where Iran is involved in proxy wars from Yemen to Syria.

Iran's foreign minister said that Washington should blame itself for ending talks with Tehran when it withdrew from the nuclear deal.

Trump would have to agree to return to the internationally-backed nuclear deal with Iran and also would have to suspend new sanctions against Tehran before any talks, Hamid Abutalebi, an aide to Iranian President Hassan Rohani, said on Twitter.

Falahatpisheh told the Iranian Students' New Agency, "Trump knows well that America has no power to fight with Iran, while he has no idea of Iran's economic potential". "But I do worry very much belligerent rhetoric doesn't exist in a vacuum", and there is a risk of "an accidental conflagration" with Iran. He reactivated US sanctions, the most all-encompassing measures against Iran, and warned countries to stop importing Iranian oil from November 4 or risk USA penalties.

Iran and other signatories have been working to find a way to salvage the nuclear agreement, even as the USA has begun re-imposing some sanctions on Iran.

More recently, Trump and Iranian leaders have engaged in a heated war of words.
