Three dead in Zimbabwe protests over alleged election fraud

Zimbabwe election results Could the opposition party win

"We express our condolences to the bereaved".

Another protester, Colbert Mugwenhi said, "We had no weapons".

Protesters surrounded vehicles belonging to the observer missions as they passed through downtown Harare.

The results of the race are expected on Saturday and the European Union mission says a more detailed statement on how the election results were handled will be released soon.

The opposition party won in most urban centres.

ZEC is mandated to declare the final results not later than August 4.

Police fired teargas to disperse the rowdy crowds before the army intervened, with the Justice Minister later justifying the action the "people's army" is there to assist the police. Charamba confirmed that the police made a decision to engage the military allegedly due to the magnitude of the protests.

Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba was not reachable for comment.

MDC Alliance's Tendai Biti said there was a clear attempt by Zanu-PF to interfere "with the people's will" and warned the party not to "plunge Zimbabwe into chaos". The situation was under control as police secured the area. Mugabe had ruled the country since gaining independence from Britain in 1980.

"We are exhausted of them stealing our votes". But MDC-T chairman Morgen Komichi said the opposition was not behind the protests.

After burning tyres in the streets, scores of his supporters attacked riot police near the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) headquarters. "This was a free expression of the people's will".

"We however encourage al students and youth to go and vote, but when the clarion call of defense has been raised, lets all do so in the interests of nation building and self cleansing from despotism", said Bassopo. Numerous protesters tried to get into the National Results Centre (NRC).

It alleges that the governing Zanu-PF party has rigged Monday's elections. "He threatened to shut down Harare", Masimirembwa said.

The first parliamentary results trickled in this morning and put Emmerson Mnangagwa in the lead to win the landmark election in Zimbabwe. We are seriously meant to wonder what this means.

Equally, Mnangagwa held the opposition alliance responsible for the loss of life due to members of the armed forces opening fire on protesters.

However, Douglas Mwonzora, a top MDC Alliance official, told the BBC's Andrew Harding that the endorsement on Sunday of their candidate by Mr Mugabe had cost the party votes.

"The soldiers have been firing live ammunition on fleeing civilians in the crowded streets with some of the injured and dead being shot in the back, including women", ZimRights said.

The United States Embassy in Harare is deeply concerned by events unfolding in Harare.

To chat about this further we're joined by Tino Mambeu from the Zimbabwe Exile Forum.

"Zimbabwe has an historic opportunity to move the country towards a brighter future for all its citizens".

The campaigning, Mnangagwa said, and the voting process had been peaceful and as such, "incidents of wanton violence and hooliganism which broke out this afternoon in the capital, come as a complete surprise".

Observers from the Southern African Development Community called the elections "a political watershed in Zimbabwe's history" but with some shortcomings, urging anyone with grievances to refrain from violence.
