US says remains returned by North Korea likely American

Kim Jong Un waves before departing Pyongyang to Singapore

In a report dated July 28, 2017, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency estimated that the North possesses as many as 60 nuclear weapons, but Monday's report said that intelligence agencies had in recent months increased their estimates of the size of the arsenal, taking into account enriched uranium from at least one secret enrichment site.

At Hickam, Vice President Mike Pence and Adm. Phil Davidson, commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, will preside at what is called an "honorable carry" ceremony before the remains go to the DPAA's forensic labs in Hawaii to begin the painstaking work of identification.

"Keep in mind that it's not necessarily the case that" the person identified in the dog tag will be among the remains but they're hopeful, he said.

The remains will undergo further genetic analyses in Hawaii, Reuters reported, adding that officials have predicted that the identification process could several years.

Pence said the return of the first set of the remains shows progress in the relationship with North Korea, but is only a first step. The official did not know details about the single dog tag, including the name on it or whether it was even that of an American military member. About 5,300 of that total are believed to have died on battlefields and in prison camps in what is now North Korea.

7,699 Americans are still listed as missing from the Korean War.

"We see them going to work, just as before", one U.S. official said. It said it "never leaves troops behind, living or deceased, and will continue the mission of repatriation until every service member returns home".

Trump's remark at a political rally Wednesday in Tampa, Florida, was the latest sign of friction between the United States and North Korea, as they attempt to implement on Kim's June 12 agreement to "work toward complete denuclearisation".

"We look forward to potentially pursuing [recovery] operations in North Korea in the future and we're very hopeful", he said.

"We are doing well in North Korea, although I happen to think that we're doing so well with China that China maybe is getting in our way", Trump said, noting that Kim has continued to refrain from launching missiles.

Reports last week suggested that a separate North Korean site used to develop missile engines was dismantling its facilities. But examination showed that the remains were from more than 208 individuals.

According to the Post, senior North Korean officials may be trying to deceive Washington about their nuclear and missile capabilities.

At the inter-Korean military talks, the head of the North Korean delegation also pushed for Seoul's support for a joint declaration with the United States to formally end the war.

The North Koreans provided enough information about where each body was found to allow US officials to match them to battles fought between 1950 and 1951, Byrd said.

Richard Downes' father is one of the Korean War missing.

The signing of a peace treaty could allow the North to demand the pullout of the 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea.
