Trump EPA Rolls Back Obama-Era Fuel Economy Standards

Trump team wants to roll back Obama-era mileage standards

The Trump administration, taking aim at one of former President Barack Obama's signature environmental achievements, is proposing to freeze vehicle fuel economy requirements at the 2020 level and unwind California's authority to limit tailpipe emissions in the state. Those standards target a doubling of the fuel economy standards to 50 miles per gallon. At the moment, the state standard and the national one are the same-but if they diverged, automakers could end up making multiple versions of each auto to sell in different parts of the U.S. The Trump administration wants to take away California's right to set higher standards. The result, opponents say, will be dirtier air and more pollution-related illness and death.

The Trump administration has moved to loosen fuel efficiency regulations, setting up a fight with a coalition of states led by California.

The state has struggled to rein in vehicle pollution.

The Trump administration wants more gas guzzlers. The state, and others that have adopted the standard, have vowed to fight in court.

They noted "it's time for substantive negotiations to begin", and urged "California and the federal government to find a common sense solution".

The administration is hoping to have the new rules in place by the end of the year, with the draft proposal now open to a 60 day comment period.

Administration officials said the Obama rules added US$2,340 to the cost of owning a new auto and that more Americans have been priced out of the market for new vehicles.

Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown responded swiftly.

Public housing in states including OH to go smoke
The ban does not apply to e-cigarettes, snuff and chewing tobacco, although there may be restrictions on those in some areas. Several hundred thousand NYCHA residents are now barred from smoking in their apartments, hallways or even outside.

Now Trump Says He Is Willing to Negotiate on Border Wall Funding
And GOP leaders in Congress are reluctant to see a government shutdown this fall, just weeks ahead of the midterm elections . But Trump's latest threats could bring congressional gridlock back on the agenda in the final stretch of the 2018 campaign.

General Motors said in a statement that it wants to work "with all parties to achieve one national 50-state program", adding that it was committed to "continually improving fuel economy and our commitment to an all-electric future".

Vehicles are the single largest cause of emissions in the USA that cause global warming, recently surpassing the electricity sector.

Transportation experts question the reasoning behind the proposal. Electric cars and trucks still account for a tiny fraction of those sold, and driver preference for SUVs, along with relatively low gas prices, have inhibited progress there.

Using an open-source, peer-reviewed digital tool called the Energy Policy Simulator, Energy Innovation modeled the impact of the proposed changes. The firm projects the policy would cost the USA economy $457 billion and cause 13,000 deaths by 2050, as air quality suffers.

Continuing its assault on federal rules created to protect the environment and combat global warming, the Trump administration has proposed weakening future fuel efficiency standards for American cars and trucks.

Those assertions are refuted by thousands of pages of data the Obama administration used in developing the regulation.

Under the Trump administration's proposal, fuel economy will continue to increase through 2020. It also claims that lower new auto prices would mean more folks buying them and moving out of older, less safe cars.

Easing requirements that cars be more fuel efficient should make them both cheaper and safer, getting vehicles with the latest safety developments in the hands of consumers, officials said. "They have failed before". "But if not, I'd remind them that California has won this battle before".

California has a lot riding on the lawsuit as the government is also seeking to eliminate the state's ability to set its own vehicle standards.
