President Donald Trump rips LeBron James in late-night tweet

Lebron James and Donald Trump

"Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon", The Donald tweeted.

"I believe the president is kind of trying to divide us", James said.

He made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do.

She also noted that Mrs Trump's Be Best initiative promoted responsible online behaviour, in perhaps another not so subtle dig at her husband.

Lemon's tweet doesn't mince words as he slams Trump for separating families at the border and praises James' recent opening of his free "I Promise" school in Akron, Oh. for at-risk youth. "He's doing an incredible job for his community".

"And what I've noticed over the last few months", James said, "he's kind of used sport to kind of divide us".

James is coming off an eventful week where he opened up a school in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz said Trump's tweet was "a sign of an insecure human being" and condemned the USA leader for "setting a bad example for our kids." . The pair also discussed sports, politics and race relations.

Saturday's statement would not be the first time the first lady illustrated her independence from her husband.

While NBA athletes, entertainers and politicians alike fired off a flurry of responses directed at the president, James' first tweet following Trump's diss made no mention of the former reality TV star turned politician.

After Mr Donald Trump sniped back at basketball player LeBron James' suggestion that he fuels American racial divides, support has flooded in for the NBA great - including from the US President's own wife.

In the same interview, James said he thought Trump was using sports to sow division in the US. The first lady's spokeswoman dismissed the story as trivial, but also said that Melania Trump would watch any channel she wants.

On the night of August 3, the president took to Twitter to slam LeBron and journalist Don Lemon after seeing an interview that LeBron gave to CNN about opening the school earlier in the week.

Others have come forward to defend James, including National Basketball Association legend Michael Jordan, who praised James for "doing an wonderful job for his community".

James described Trump as a "bum" following the furore.
