Court rejects appeal for American pastor's release from detention, Turkish media says

Turkey to boycott US electronic goods

In a conference call with thousands of investors and economists, Albayrak - who is President Tayyip Erdogan's son-in-law - said Turkey fully understood and recognised all its domestic challenges but was dealing with what he described as a market anomaly.

Some Turks are reacting with defiance to their plunging currency and an escalating trade and political dispute with the United States - an indication that they are ready to endure economic pain and risk further deterioration in a key, yet troubled alliance dating from the Cold War.

The United States also pushes Ankara to comply with its sanctions recently imposed on Iran, while Turkey said it would continue to buy gas from its neighbour.

However, despite US tariffs on steel, exports in the sector grew by 26.7 percent to $8.4 billion in the first seven months of this year compared to $6.6 billion in the same period of 2017.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said his country will boycott United States electronic products, after Washington imposed punitive sanctions on Ankara.

A decree by Erdogan doubled Turkish tariffs on imports of USA passenger cars to 120 per cent, alcoholic drinks to 140 per cent and leaf tobacco to 60 per cent. Tariffs were also doubled on goods such as cosmetics, rice and coal.

The United States imposed sanctions on two Turkish government ministers over the trial on terrorism charges of U.S. evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson in Turkey, and last week Washington raised tariffs on Turkish metal exports.

The White House called the Turkish response a step in the wrong direction and signalled a hard line. Although narrowly tailored, those penalties have contributed to a slide in the value of the Turkey's currency, the lira, amid fears of a broad economic crisis.

President Trump demanded Turkey free Brunson and then followed through with his threat to hit Ankara with sanctions and tariffs when he wasn't released. Brunson is accused of backing a 2016 coup attempt against Erdogan, which Brunson denies.

Erdogan said his government would offer further incentives to companies planning to invest in Turkey and said firms should not be put off by economic uncertainty.

She wouldn't be drawn on whether the Trump administration would respond.

The currency strengthened some 3 percent against the dollar on Thursday, trading at around 5.75 per dollar, hours before Turkey's treasury and finance minister were scheduled to reassure worldwide investors about the economy.

Some feel Erdogan's signal in his article titled "How Turkey Sees the Crisis with the U.S." that Ankara is not without options aims more to please the public.

It made a decision to release two Greek soldiers from prison on Tuesday.

Evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson is standing trial in Turkey over terrorism charges.

Erdogan's government insists the Turkish judicial system must be respected, and Brunson's fate now rests with a court in Ankara that is expected to rule on the American's legal appeal for release this week.

In response, Erdogan has called for a boycott of USA electrical goods while Ankara has sharply hiked tariffs on some U.S. goods.

It usually takes a court between 3 to 7 days to process an appeal but a ruling could come sooner in this case, Brunson's lawyer Ismail Cem Halavurt told Reuters.
