US newspapers to Trump: We're not enemies of the people

Newspaper Editorials Across the US Rebuke Trump for Attacks on Press

U.S. newspapers are coming together to warn Donald Trump against his "fake news" rhetoric with a co-ordinated series of editorials condemning his attacks on the press.

Trump later returned to his attack message on all news media, issuing atweet blasting the Globe for "collusion with other papers on free press" and repeating his recurring jibe at the "failing New York Times".

Trump tweeted that he supports a free press but much of what the United States press prints is "fake news".

Visitors scan front pages of Thursday newspapers at the Newseum in Washington, including The Boston Globe, which spearheaded and coordinated the designated day of day of anti-Trump editorials.

"The greatness of America is dependent on the role of a free press to speak the truth to the powerful", the Globe said.

Trump has frequently criticized journalists and described news reports that contradict his opinion or policy positions as fake news.

"If you haven't already, please subscribe to your local papers", said the Times, whose opinion section also summarised other editorials across the country.

The Senate, by unanimous voice vote, passed a non-binding resolution which "affirms the press is not the enemy of the people".

Despite Trump's rhetoric, he claimed to be a supporter of freedom of the press. It is very bad for our Great Country....

Trump, while pushing back against the coordinated editorials against him, alleged much of what they said were fake news ad accused them of pushing a political agenda or trying to hurt people.

"This is one of the many lies that have been thrown out by this president, much like an old-time charlatan threw out "magic" dust or water on a hopeful crowd", its editorial, entitled "Journalists are not the Enemy", said. He's also called media "the enemy of the American people".

The San Francisco Chronicle will not be participating in Thursday's joint effort.

President Trump is defending himself against the media, saying he supports free press as long as the stories are accurate. Correcting them is core to our job.

"It's not that we disagree with concerns about the president's language in speeches and on social media", the Capital Gazette Editorial Board wrote.

"For more than two centuries, this foundational American principle has protected journalists at home and served as a model for free nations overseas". "We noted with regret the hurtful nature of his remarks last month calling most journalists dishonest even as we attended funerals for five friends and colleagues killed in the June 28 attack on our newsroom".

Politico's media critic, Jack Shafer, wrote this week that the coordinated editorial response was sure to backfire.
