Aretha's lack of a will could make things rocky for heirs

Aretha has returned home

Detroit has plans to honor one of its most famous residents.

The formal part of the service stretching almost eight hours, the celebration of the life and legacy of the United States icon was packed with gospel, eulogies, music and sermons.

She definitely did just that. "She was about transforming the existence of black America".

He said Franklin lived "not without fear, but overcoming her fears". And a niece of hers has accepted the role of executor. And then came Aretha.

"At that time, we shared the fact that we had the same disease", Knight said. Some other performers counted Aretha Franklin as a friend and colleague for many decades, like Stevie Wonder.

Franklin is expected to make her final journey in the same ivory 1940 Cadillac LaSalle used at the funerals of her father and of civil rights icon Rosa Parks.

Aretha Franklin became the first woman to be voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some fans were admitted into the church to sit behind Franklin's family. The Welsh Guards Band performed a rendition of her song, Respect, during the changing of the guard ceremony. "Nothing sounded better to me than the way my grandma sings". You felt every word, every note, every emotion in the songs she sang.

Smokey Robinson spoke movingly of the childhood friend he would miss for the rest of his life and broke briefly into acappella song. First published earlier in the year, Aretha is quoted famously in this book "Being the queen is not all about singing and being a diva is not all about singing..." He said he wasn't expecting to say goodbye. I'll miss you, my friend.

"The other Sunday on my show, you know, I misspelled 'respect, ' and a lot of y'all corrected me", Sharpton said. And while Americans are well-known for their anti-aristocratic strain, she was universally crowned and internationally known and revered as the Queen of Soul. Ending his remarks, Clinton held the microphone to his smartphone and played Franklin's 1968 hit "Think" over the church's speakers.

Actress Cicely Tyson reworked the Paul Laurence Dunbar poem "When Malindy Sings" to "When Aretha Sings". Walk in the light. The Franklin household was filled with two things: music and politics, and all these influences found their way into Franklin's art and advocacy.

ARETHA FRANKLIN ORCHESTRA: (Singing) Of mercy shine bright. "She was about working with Martin Luther King Jr. and Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton".

"#ArianaGrande don't know the below the knee rule for the pulpit in the black church".

CORLEY: All throughout the week, fans came from around the country to pay their respects to the Grammy Award-winning megastar as Franklin lay in repose.

CORLEY: And the mayor brought the crowd to its feet when he said a popular park would be renamed for Franklin.

The Wright Museum is the second-largest black museum in the US, and it hosted a viewing in 2005 for civil rights activist Rosa Parks.

A public concert and memorial service celebrated Franklin's life last night.

JOANN WATSON: She would ride the streets of Detroit, taking note of people who have special needs, quietly dispensing donations. Some did; former President Clinton was given extra time. Barack Obama and George Bush sent letters.
