Toobin: Trump's attack against Sessions an 'impeachable offense'

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions will meet with several state attorneys general to discuss whether social media companies are "intentionally stifling" free speech and obstructing competition, the Department of Justice said on Wednesday.

Trump attacked the attorney general blaming him for charges against two congressmen which according to him has jeopardised Republican chances in the November 6 midterm elections.

According to a 2016 Justice Department memorandum by then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch that CNN cited, prosecutors "may never select the timing of investigative steps or criminal charges for the goal of affecting any election, or for the objective of giving an advantage or disadvantage to any candidate or political party".

Mr Trump wrote on Twitter that the justice department's decision to file charges put "easy wins now in doubt".

Indicted separately last month were congressman Duncan Hunter of California on charges that included spending campaign funds for personal expenses and congressman Chris Collins of NY on insider trading.

There has typically been a separation between the White House and the Justice Department, but Trump has frequently disregarded those norms, giving orders to Sessions. Investigators are not supposed to take into account the political affiliations of the people they investigate, and the department has a history of prosecuting lawmakers of both major political parties no matter which controls the White House.

Republican congressional leadership considered the charges serious enough to move to strip both men of their committee assignments.

Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in Damascus for Assad talks
Iranian, Russian and Turkish presidents are scheduled to meet in Tehran to discuss the latest developments in Syria in early September.

"Good job Jeff", the president tweeted in apparent reference to the indictments of Rep. Duncan D. Hunter (Calif.) and Rep. Chris Collins (N.Y.).

Therefore, Vice President Mike Pence's most recent comments about the attorney general come as a surprise and perhaps out of character.

Sen. Dick Durbin, the second ranking Democrat in the Senate, called Trump's actions, including firing former FBI Director James Comey and his tweets that criticized Sessions, "unprecedented in American history". The White House subsequently said it was "taking a look" at whether, and how, Google should be regulated by the government. Sessions, for his part, recused himself from the investigation due to his part as an ally to President Trump during the 2016 election and his communication with the Russians.

The justice department has not commented on the tweet. Woodward reports that Trump said of Sessions, "This guy is mentally retarded".

"Our justice system is under attack", Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, said Tuesday.

Although presidents and attorney generals have clashed in previous administrations, experts see Trump as breaking new ground in terms of the public and aggressive ways he pressures Sessions.
