Florence becomes a hurricane, takes aim at U.S. Southeast

TROPICS: Florence to become a hurricane today; TD 9 strengthening

As for Florence, the hurricane center said Saturday morning that "gradual restrengthening is forecast over the weekend". As it slowly continues to move west, it will encounter more favorable conditions, such as a decrease in wind shear and warmer sea surface temperatures, which will lead to Florence strengthening into a hurricane Sunday, and rapid intensification Monday.

Helene's expected to turn north well ahead of threatening the U.S. East Coast.

The storm was expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents along the US east coast this weekend. As NPR's Bill Chappell reported, the town of Mountain View on the Big Island recorded 51.53 inches of rain as a result of Lane, the third-highest total ever measured from a USA storm.

The biggest threats include flooding and damaging winds.

The Governor's Office, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Virginia National Guard, the Virginia State Police, and other state agencies have already begun preparations for the impacts of Tropical Storm Florence. "During harvest, time is of the essence". "Action today can avoid losses due to Florence".

It's not really a question of whether Florence will hit the Carolinas.
