Schauffele grabs lead at Aronimink

Justin Rose back in the Philly area and at Aronimink feeling good vibes

They had a one-shot lead over Xander Schauffele.

Sep 6, 2018; Newtown Square, PA, USA; Rory McIlroy hits his tee shot on the second hole during the first round of the BMW Championship golf tournament at Aronimink GC.

Everything else felt that way Thursday in the BMW Championship, where Woods had his lowest score in an opening round in almost 20 years and his best score on the PGA Tour since his last victory more than five years ago.

He also made it more hard on Woods, who again goes into a weekend have to catch up to the leaders.

Woods also had a disappointing second day and slipped five shots off the lead to tied 12th after a level-par 70.

Keegan Bradley and Hideki Matsuyama shot 6-under 64s and Rickie Fowler, playing alongside Woods, carded another 5-under 65. That made for an early finish, and overnight rain made for another low-scoring day at Aronimink Golf Club. Justin Rose leads after 54 holes at 17 under, but he has horses behind him. He almost chipped in for birdie after missing the green at the par-3 fifth hole but settled for par, which he did from holes two through six.

It was some way for Woods to justify - if he still needed to - captain Jim Furyk's decision earlier this week to include him as a wildcard for the USA's Ryder Cup team.

"He's just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been capitalizing on for years", Obama said . The former president urged Americans to take on issues such as racism, saying progress can be made.

Schauffele, the victor of last year's Tour Championship, had been among the frontrunners for a Ryder Cup spot with strong performances at the U.S. Open (equal sixth) and British Open (equal second). "But they didn't go in today".

"I have to make birdies and try and keep pace", Woods said. "I lose strength and I lose power and endurance". He needs to be at East Lake to reach 25. 9, 10, 11 in the standings - and has one more pick after the BMW Championship.

"I made a few putts today, right out of the gate".

The 24-year-old American opened with four birdies in his first seven holes at Aronimink and stood on 13-under 127 after 36 holes in the final playoff event before the season-ending Tour Championship.

"Still have a good chance tomorrow", Schauffele said.

Finau finished solo second at the Northern Trust and T-4 at last week's Dell Technologies Championship.

The PGA Tour's on-site meteorologist Joe Halvorson laid out some best-case and worst-case scenarios on Saturday night for what Sunday might look like.
