Florence delivers more drenching rains in eastern US

At least 10 people have died in North Carolina because of Hurricane Florence, and Gov. Roy Cooper urged residents Sunday to beware of treacherous flash flooding in the days to come.

With flood waters rising rapidly in many communities, stranded people were being rescued by boat and by helicopter, while tens of thousands of others hunkered down in shelters.

The highway could be flooded near Fayetteville and near the SC state line because of expected flooding in the Cape Fear and Lumber rivers.

60 primary roads have been closes, with more closures expected.

Eudy said his family stayed in their home partly to protect their house.

About 756,000 homes and businesses were without power on Sunday in North and SC and surrounding states, down from a peak of almost 1 million.Five people were arrested for breaking into a Dollar General Store, said the police department in Wilmington, which has imposed a nighttime curfew.

Catastrophic floods raised the threat of dam breaks and landslides across the Carolinas on Sunday, prolonging the agony caused by a killer hurricane that has left more than a dozen dead and billions of dollars in damage in the southeastern United States.

"Were expecting additional rainfall across southeastern central into southern North Carolina and across Northern parts of SC where additional rainfall amounts that could exceed 10 inches". Resident Jay Manning said he and his wife watched with alarm as water filled the street.

At the W. H. Weatherspoon Power Station near Lumberton, Sheehan said it had already rained more than 30 inches (75 centimeters) by Saturday evening, causing a nearby swamp to overflow into the plants cooling pond.

The head of the US government's disaster relief agency says Florence is unfortunately delivering the damage that was predicted as it sweeps across the Carolinas.

At 2 a.m. Sunday, Florence was about 25 miles (45 kilometers) southeast of Columbia, South Carolina.

The White House yesterday said President Donald Trump had approved making federal funding available in some counties.
