Brett Kavanaugh's Accuser Comes Forward

Cruz says Democrats 'playing games' but agrees that Kavanaugh's accuser should testify before confirmation vote

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the woman accusing him of sexual assault more than three decades ago, Christine Blasey Ford, will both testify publicly before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 24. Her allegation has now put in doubt the timing of a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation, and perhaps the nomination itself. Retiring Sens. Jeff Flake of Arizona, a member of the Judiciary Committee, says he is not comfortable holding a vote until Ford's allegations are heard. Sen.

The allegation first came to light late last week in the form of a letter that has been in the possession of Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, for some time.

Republicans had also displayed no willingness to delay a Judiciary panel vote that Grassley had planned for this Thursday to advance the nomination, setting the stage for full Senate confirmation of Kavanaugh by month's end, in time for the new Supreme Court session.

The president said he had not spoken on Monday with his nominee, who was spending part of the day at the White House. Ford has said she chose to come forward only when her name began leaking out.

Eshoo says that in weighing privacy concerns, the woman "has demonstrated her willingness to risk these factors to present the truth".

Feinstein has been around Washington long enough to know that her opaque statement guaranteed that the contents of the letter, sent by a Stanford law professor on behalf of the accuser, would be pursued and publicized in short order.

Over the summer, Ford sent a letter to Feinstein, her US senator, alleging in dramatic and chilling detail that years ago that Kavanaugh, as another young man watched, pinned her down, groped and assaulted her when they were teenagers at a party.

If the Judiciary committee's timetable slips, it would become increasingly hard for Republicans to schedule a vote before midterm elections on November 6 elections, when congressional control will be at stake.

But, also, Mr. Kavanaugh is saying things in private to senators that I think is going to be important. Both Collins and Murkowski are considered potential swing votes on Kavanaugh's nomination.

Republicans, who hold a narrow majority on the committee and in the Senate, are eager to confirm Kavanaugh in time for him to join the high court when it begins its fall term in two weeks. "At that point, Dr. Blasey retained counsel and then communication went between staff and Dr. Blasey's counsel", Katz said.

US Davis Cup players try to stay out of Williams controversy
Almost a week after the US Open women's final, people are still talking about the former world No.1's "meltdown". Sadly, in what should have been a triumphant moment for Naomi Osaka-becoming the first U.S.

"I thought he might inadvertently kill me", Ford said in the story.

A Senate committee may be forced to postpone its vote this week on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, while members explore fresh allegations of a decades-old sexual assault. Key will be the views of Sens.

"There's a difference between making a mistake and having it be your character", says Cleta Mitchell, a Republican election attorney based in Washington, D.C., and a supporter of Kavanaugh. She said she managed to escape once Kavanaugh's friend, identified as Mark Judge, jumped on top of them.

In an article published Sunday, Ford told The Washington Post that one summer in the early 1980s, Kavanaugh and a friend - both "stumbling drunk", Ford alleges - corralled her in a bedroom during a gathering of teenagers at a house in Montgomery County, Maryland.

It comes as the US Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on Monday that the FBI should reopen its background investigation into President Donald Trump's pick for Supreme Court judge.

Earlier Monday, Biden said through a spokesperson that he believed Kavanaugh's nomination should be postponed until Christine Blasey Ford, the clinical psychology professor who's accused the judge of physical and sexual assault, has an opportunity to tell her story.

In the interview, Ford says she didn't reveal what had happened until 2012, when she and her husband sought couples therapy.

With that said, Graham added that such considerations should be made when the accused is seeking a confirmation vote before the Senate.

Katz said her client "was not wanting to inject herself into this". Debra S. Katz, Ford's attorney, said on NBC's "Today" that Ford was ready to testify publicly to the Judiciary panel, but she did not respond Monday evening to efforts to learn whether she would appear.
