India to Address the United Nations General Assembly Today

The minister reaffirmed Pakistan's desire to engage India into meaningful dialogue

In her speech to the UN General Assembly, Swaraj who listed climate change alongside terrorism as two of the biggest "existential threats" facing the world, also made a strong case for reforming the world body, warning that "the importance, influence, respect and value" accorded to the institution had begun to "ebb". "The [Narendra] Modi government wasted an opportunity for a dialogue for the third time due to their negative attitude", he underlined.

Exercising right to reply, Pakistan diplomat at the United Nations said that in India claims of religious superiority are perpetrated through straight patronage all across the country and claimed that "the bleeding ground of terrorism in our region are the RSS centres of fascism".

Swaraj and Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were supposed to meet on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly this week. He referred to extremist attacks in his home country, including one at an army school in the northwestern city of Peshawar in 2014 that killed more than 150 children, which he said were perpetrated by "terrorists supported by India".

Addressing the UN General Assembly, she said, the United Nations must accept that it needs fundamental reform and reform can not be cosmetic. "They used the pretext of stamps issued months ago of a Kashmiri activist and depicting grave human rights violations, including pellet gun victims, as an excuse to back out from the talks", said Qureshi.

Eenam Gambhir, India's First Secretary in Permanent Mission to the UN, made the remark while exercising India's right to reply at the ongoing United Nations General Assembly session in NY.

"We welcome the report. We call for the implementation on its recommendations", he said.

She called for the early adoption of "one of the necessary measures in a long running war", the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, which was proposed by India in 1996 and has been stalled because of United Nations members can't agree on a definition of terrorism.
