Russian Federation accused of 'brazen' cyber-crimes

The New Zealand GCSB has uncovered links between malicious cyber activity and the Russian government

It cites attacks on the World Anti-Doping Agency, Ukrainian transport systems, the 2016 US presidential race and others as very likely the work of the GRU.

Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the foreign affairs committee in the upper house of Russian parliament, denounced the accusations as fake, saying they are intended to "delegitimize Russia" and pave the way for using any illegitimate means against it.

They were escorted to Schiphol airport and put on a plane without their items, and the intelligence services were in charge of the operation.

Dutch intelligence thwarted a Russian cyber attack targeting the global chemical weapons watchdog in April and expelled four Russian agents, the government said on Thursday.

The GRU, the British report said, was nearly certainly behind the "BadRabbit" ransomware attack previous year that targeted a Ukrainian worldwide airport and Russian media outlets, as well as the hacking of the World Anti-Doping Agency in Switzerland.

Data from the laptop showed it was also present in the Swiss city of Lausanne where it was linked to the hacking of a laptop belonging to the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), which has exposed doping by Russian athletes.

The NCSC associated four new attacks with the GRU, on top of previous strikes believed to have been conducted by Russian intelligence. The activities in Malaysia were related to the investigation into the 2014 shooting down of flight MH17 over Ukraine, Bijleveld added. All 298 people on board were killed.

A British government official explained: "Shock went around the world after the novichok incident in Salisbury".

The Russian embassy in London said the UK's statement was "reckless" and part of an "anti-Russian campaign by the United Kingdom government".

The seven were charged with computer hacking, wire fraud, identity theft and money laundering.

Well, we now know what she means.

What were the suspects doing in the Netherlands? "Yes, that's one of our receipts".

It was also reported that the two agents had been planning to travel on to the OPCW-registered laboratory in Spiez near Berne.

They never made it.

After the Salisbury poisonings, the British government scored a significant diplomatic success in persuading 28 countries to expel more than 150 Russian diplomats and intelligence agents. Those were Minin, Sotnikov, Serebriakov and Morenets.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has identified that a number of cyber actors widely known to have been conducting cyber attacks around the world are, in fact, the GRU.

According to a USA indictment on Thursday, the GRU targeted the hacking victims because they had publicly supported a ban on Russian athletes in global sports competitions and because they had condemned Russia's state-sponsored athlete doping programme.

The Netherlands said it had caught four GRU officers red handed as they tried to hack into the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons from a hotel next door in April.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB spy, said on Wednesday that Skripal, a GRU officer who betrayed dozens of agents to Britain's MI6 foreign spy service, was a "scumbag" who had betrayed Russia.

What was on their computer?

Dutch Minister of Defence Ank Bijleveld and British Ambassador to the Netherlands Peter Wilson attend a news conference in The Hague, Netherlands, October 4, 2018. Russian Federation has denied any involvement in the plane's destruction.

WADA suspended RUSADA in 2016 and banned Russian athletes from competing in the Rio Olympics that year after finding them to be non-compliant with the body's doping code, in the wake of the McLaren report into Russian state-sponsored doping.

According to Eric Welling, Deputy Assistant Director for the FBI's Cyber Division, these GRU hackers operated under the name "Fancy Bear Hacking Team", the same group of Russian government-backed hackers that was the focus of Special Counsel Robert Muller's indictment of GRU hackers early this summer. Skripal was himself a former military intelligence officer turned double-agent.
