May's Day: Prime Minister to fight back in key conference speech

Jeremy Wright speaks at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham

In her keynote speech, Mrs May launched a stinging attack on Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, saying he had rejected his party's cherished values. May even poked fun at her robotic public image — cemented when her awkward dance moves on a trip to Africa went viral — by busting a move as she took the stage to Abba's "Dancing Queen". This is what she said.

Warning party members about Brexit, she said divorce negotiations with the European Union were entering the "toughest phase" and urged Conservatives to back her plan for a future trade deal.

It is probably a relatively safe bet that this was May's last time addressing the Conservative Party conference as leader and prime minister. "She is putting her country before herself, which not many people would do".

May's speech was a triumph compared with last year's event, when she was plagued by a cough, interrupted by a prankster and had parts of the stage backdrop fall down as she was speaking.

PRIME MINISTER THERESA MAY: What we are proposing is very challenging for the EU.

That's why alongside the discussions about Brexit, actually what this conference has been focusing on is the changes we're making to people in terms of things like putting extra money into social care, to ensure we're dealing with the winter pressures, to the commitment we've already made for more money for the National Health Service, the changes we're making in the apprenticeship levy, to ensure that we get those good apprenticeships available for our young people.

She said: "Our proposal is for a free trade deal that provides for frictionless trade in goods".

In an upbeat message to activists and voters, she declared: "If we come together, there is no limit to what we can achieve". May insists her ideas offer the only way to protect jobs and trade while also avoiding physical checks on Britain's land border with European Union member Ireland. MPs asked the British people to take this decision.

The Senate is expected take an initial vote on Friday morning to begin the process for final voting on Kavanaugh's nomination. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said those issues raised serious doubts about Kavanaugh and his qualifications.

United Kingdom said to plan compromise on Irish border to get Brexit deal
When asked if she was prepared to vote down PM May on a Brexit deal, she said: "We don't want to be in that position". As he had spent half his life under Soviet rule "I know what I'm talking about", Mr Tusk said.

On Wednesday, she was keen to show she was in charge of the Brexit talks.

Addressing such speculation, Johnson said that Chancellor Philip Hammond's prediction that he would never be prime minister was "one of the first treasury forecasts in a long time to have a distinct ring of truth". So I would like her to concentrate on domestic policy and what the Conservatives should be doing beyond Brexit: housing policy, financial policy, health policy.

The former foreign secretary caused anger in the corporate world earlier this year when he dismissed concerns over Brexit and reportedly said "f*** business".

In a conference where the policy agenda put forward by Corbyn and his shadow Cabinet has received more comment than ever before, May will attack her opposite number's leadership call for a return to decency in political discourse.

"It has a single syllable".

However, rather than accept responsibility for the Home Office blunder which saw thousands of the Windrush Generation, who helped rebuild Postwar Britain facing deportation, May referenced the disaster to rouse support for Shaun Bailey, the Conservative pick for the 2020 London mayoral elections: 'If your parents come to the United Kingdom as part of the Windrush Generation, you could become the next London mayor.' The camera quickly tried to find Bailey, who was sitting a few rows back from the party's big names and cabinet members. Austerity began life based on the big lie that the financial crash was a public debt problem - it may be naive to believe the same people when they declare it to be over.

But while Johnson may be holding his fire on the leadership bid for now, he gave both barrels to May's Brexit plan and set out his vision for the Conservative Party - one that returned to its traditional values of low taxes and a strong police.
