Sisters found tied together in NY river identified

US police probe deaths of Saudi sisters found duct-taped together

The two Saudi Arabian sisters whosebodies were found, taped together, along New York City's waterfront, had indicated that they "would rather do harm to themselves" than return to their home country, the police said on Friday, citing unnamed sources.

It's unclear what mode of transportation the sisters used and the specific time frames they visited each city, a NY police spokesman said. "Until as best we can surmise at this point in time ... the credit card, the money started to run out".

The sisters' bodies were taped together and facing each other, but had no obvious signs of trauma, police said. The sisters, ages 16 and 22, had been placed in a shelter in Virginia in December of past year, according to Shea, after reporting physical abuse by family members.

Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 22, were discovered on the rocky Manhattan riverbank fully clothed and taped together with duct tape around their waists and ankles. It said the sisters were students "accompanying their brother in Washington".

Water was found in the sisters' lungs, the official said, which means they were likely alive when they entered the river.

The New York Police Department says there's no evidence the sisters went anywhere else after arriving in New York, and took various forms of transportation while making their way to the city.

Earlier this week, police said the mother of the girls claimed she received a call from the Saudi Arabian embassy in Washington, D.C.

The jogger who said he saw the sisters praying went to the police on Wednesday. That December, they wound up in a "shelter-like facility due to some abuse allegations that came up", Shea said.

A spokesperson for the institute called the news of her death "tragic", and said the university was cooperating with police. They were seen on surveillance footage, apparently in good health, a week before their bodies were discovered.

Authorities claim the sisters recently applied for asylum in the US, but did not give the reason why. There are also reports the girls sought political asylum in the United States. HuffPost could not independently confirm this, and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The family said they were not in contact with them.

The NYPD has conducted various interviews in Virginia, including with family members.

"We are out to get justice for those two girls and to find out exactly what happened", Shea said.
