Iran Test Launches Multiple-Warhead Ballistic Missile

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of regional escalation after Iran conducted a missile test

The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, criticised Iran's missile programme at the weekend and will be at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels over the next two days to underline his message about the threat to Middle East stability posed by Iran.

The Secretary of State is now in Brussels, Belgium, attending a summit of foreign ministers of NATO member states, meant to discuss the main security challenges that the alliance faces, including the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

He made the remarks in response to comments by his American counterpart Mike Pompeo, who has accused Iran of violating a United Nations Security Council resolution by testing a ballistic missile capable of carrying multiple warheads.

U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo offered an unabashed defense of President Donald Trump's world view during a speech in Brussels on Tuesday.

In a twist on Trump's "America First" policy, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Trump was not abandoning its global leadership but instead reshaping the post-World War Two system on the basis of sovereign states, not multilateral institutions.

In Paris, the French foreign ministry also said the missile test was not in compliance with the United Nations resolution.

"As we have been warning for some time, Iran's missile testing and missile proliferation is growing", Pompeo said in the statement.

Iran has become one of the world's missile powers despite the severe western sanctions on it over the past 40 years, Iran's Defence Minister Amir Hatami said on Sunday.

"Missile tests ... are carried out for defense and the country's deterrence, and we will continue this", Iranian military spokesman Brig. The US pulled out of the deal in May this year, accusing Iran of violating the terms of the deal by continuing its missile development and of threatening regional stability.

He did not confirm or deny Iran had tested a new missile, Reuters news agency reported.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani vowed to break the sanctions imposed on Tehran's vital energy and banking sectors.

Iran's military has cited 2,000 km as the current missile range, and said USA bases in Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, plus US aircraft carriers in the Gulf, were within range.

Hook said USA discussions with the Europeans about missile sanctions are gaining traction.

The UN body adopted the resolution, which endorsed the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, in 2015.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a staunch opponent of Iran, welcomed Pompeo's request to sanction Iran's missile programme on Monday.

Mike Pompeo said United States is rallying the noble nations to build a new liberal order.

Despite the U.S. president's mantra "America First", Mr Pompeo said Washington was acting unilaterally - as he blamed Iran and China for global instability.
