Climate change a man-made disaster on global scale, warns Attenborough

Alarm sounded nations urged to act at UN climate talks

AFP's reporting reflects its acceptance of manmade climate change as a fact and the dangers imminent to the planet and its survival, stating in its report that the conference comes "at a crucial juncture" in the "battle to rein in the effects of our heating planet". At the COP24 climate talks, nations must agree to a rulebook palatable to all 183 states that have ratified the Paris deal.

"Even as we witness devastating climate impacts causing havoc across the world, we are still not doing enough, nor moving fast enough, to prevent irreversible and catastrophic climate disruption", Guterres told representatives from nearly 200 countries gathered in Katowice, Poland.

The conference, which is being held in the heart of coal country, brought together green activists, scientists, government officials, and heads of state.

The talks in Katowice have been billed as the most important United Nations conference since the landmark Paris accord as they precede an end-of-year deadline to agree a "rule book" on how to enforce action to limit global warming to between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius.

"We need serious solutions from serious leaders, not risky schemes and political tricks aimed to keep big polluters polluting", she said.

Guterres called climate change as "the most important issue we face".

Without naming specific countries, Guterres chided the nations most responsible for greenhouse gas emissions for failing to do enough to meet the goals set in Paris.

The meeting received a boost over the weekend when 19 major economies at the G-20 summit affirmed their commitment to the 2015 Paris climate accord.

Saudi Arabia ambassador returns to USA after Khashoggi's killing
US intelligence assessments and experts say it is unlikely the killing could have happened without the crown prince's knowledge. Lindsey Graham , R-S.C., told reporters after an hourlong briefing by Gina Haspel, the Central Intelligence Agency director.

Ohio State's Urban Meyer to retire
However, I have to think this is his last stop, because it's the second time he's stepped down due to medical issues. There will be no coaching search, no wild speculation about why this happened now and what it means.

Graham, Corker Say Clear Saudi Crown Prince Culpable in Khashoggi's Death
It's not clear whether Haspel will be there, the aide said. "Every senator should hear what I heard this afternoon", Durbin said. Graham said he would not vote for the Yemen resolution. "I have not seen that intelligence nor have I even seen the conclusions.

After a string of damning scientific reports showing humanity must drastically slash its greenhouse gas emissions within the next decade, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told delegates at the opening of a UN climate summit: "We are still not doing enough, nor moving fast enough".

The naturalist and TV presenter delivered a message from people around the world to United Nations climate talks in Katowice, Poland, calling for leaders and decision- makers to take charge on driving down greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to contain global warming to 1.5C by reducing the use of fossil fuels - a temperature value that is well below the 2.0C agreed in Paris back in 2016.

In Paris three years ago, countries committed to limit global temperature rises to well below 2 deg C, and to the safer cap of 1.5 deg C if at all possible.

The 2018 Emissions Gap Report from UN Environment which annually presents a definitive assessment of the "emissions gap" - the gap between anticipated emission levels in 2030, compared to levels consistent with a 2/1.5 degrees Celsius target. Over the weekend, 19 G20 member states reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris climate accord - except for the USA, which pulled out of the landmark agreement past year.

A key issue up for debate is how the fight against climate change is funded, with developed and developing nations still world's apart in their demands.

"We are in trouble, we are in deep trouble with climate change".

Delegates were played a montage of messages collected from people around the world. "For many people, regions and even countries, this is already a matter of life or death".

The climate rules and policies that are agreed at the global and national levels will have an enormous impact on how business can help combat climate change, affecting companies' domestic and worldwide operations, supply chains, planning and investments.
