Huawei executive arrested in Canada for 'violating USA sanctions on Iran'

Huawei's global chief financial officer arrested in Vancouver

Canadian Justice Department spokesman Ian McLeod said the U.S.is seeking Meng's extradition, but couldn't provide further details about the case because a publication ban is in effect at Meng's request.

'As there is a publication ban in effect, we can not provide any further detail at this time.

Huawei, in a statement, said the arrest was made on behalf of the U.S.so Meng could be extradited to "face unspecified charges" in the Eastern District of NY.

It says she was arrested when she was transferring flights in Canada.

Meanwhile, Huawei said that it has received little information about the case and was not aware of any wrongdoing on the part of Meng.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government had no involvement in the arrest of a top executive from Chinese telecoms giant Huawei.

A Chinese government statement said Meng broke no U.S. or Canadian laws and demanded Canada "immediately correct the mistake" and release her. She was arrested December 1 after the U.S. Department of Justice in April opened an investigation into whether the telecommunications giant sold gear to Iran despite sanctions on exports to the region.

USA authorities have been probing Huawei, one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications network equipment, since at least 2016 on allegations that it shipped US -derived tech products to Iran and other countries in violation of US export and sanctions laws, sources told Reuters in April.

Meng is the deputy chairman of the company's board and the daughter of its founder, Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese military engineer. ZTE, China's second-largest telecoms equipment maker, agreed to pay $1.4 billion in total fines to the United States after Washington slapped a ban in April on purchases of essential American components for seven years to punish the company for Iran sanctions violations.

Meng's arrest and the Trump administration's hard line on China mean the US-China trade war "is escalating to a new level", according to one economist.

Iran Test Launches Multiple-Warhead Ballistic Missile
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani vowed to break the sanctions imposed on Tehran's vital energy and banking sectors. Mike Pompeo said United States is rallying the noble nations to build a new liberal order.

"We will closely follow the development of the issue and take all measures to resolutely protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens", the Chinese Embassy said.

Some Western governments fear Beijing will gain access to fifth-generation (5G) mobile and other communications networks through Huawei and expand its spying ability, although the firm insists there is no government control. American officials have sought to persuade other nations to curb business ventures with Huawei because of security concerns.

The Huawei executive's arrest comes at a critical time for US-China relations.

One report in the New York Times said the USA commerce and treasury departments had subpoenaed the firm over suspected violation of sanctions against both Iran and North Korea.

James Lewis, the director of technology policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told Axios the USA should be prepared for a backlash and warned American tech executives to steer clear of China for now.

"We struggle to see how a comprehensive agreement can emerge in the next 3 months and instead expect trade tensions to resurface in earnest early next year". Federal authorities said ZTE had violated American sanctions against Iran and North Korea, in a move that caused the Chinese company to cease "major operating activities" for a time.

Huawei, the biggest global supplier of network gear used by phone and internet companies, has been the target of deepening United States security concerns.

If there is no deal at the end of that period, the USA will increase tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese goods from 10 per cent to 25 per cent.

Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trading at investment firm Oanda, linked the losses directly to Meng's arrest.
