Sajid Javid told to 'get a grip' on English Channel migrant crisis

Bulgaria France Britain Agree Action Plan on Migrant Channel Crossings

British officials say six Iranian men have been found on a beach in southeastern England as the number of migrants making risky crossings of the English Channel continues to mount.

The men are now known to be Iranian and each has been given a medical assessment and transferred to immigration officials for processing.

The men were picked up just hours after Home Secretary Sajid Javid promised to do more to stop migrants trying to illegally cross the channel and referred to it as a "major incident".

Mr Javid said yesterday: 'The situation in the Channel is of grave concern, with people gambling their lives in reckless attempts to reach the United Kingdom in unsafe boats and treacherous conditions'.

Their attempts are not unique - the number of migrants attempting to reach the United Kingdom by boat has grown over the past several months.

Mr Javid is under pressure to "get a grip" on the issue of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel amid criticism over the Government's response.

It added that Javid wants to ensure everything possible is being done to deter migrants from attempting the unsafe crossing, "amid concern that it is only a matter of time before people lose their lives". Increased security on trucks has made it more hard for migrants to access Britain that way.

Speaking to Tom Watson on LBC, Labour MP and chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee Yvette Cooper said that Mr Javid will face questions from the committee on the incident.

Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes said Javid was leaving his family holiday early to address the increase in crossings.

Ms Nokes said the number of patrol boats was being "constantly reviewed", but it was "feasible that were we to put additional craft they might act as a magnet - encouraging people to make a perilous crossing".

"He has insisted the Home Office treat the situation as a major incident and has. asked for daily updates", it said in a statement on Friday.

The National Crime Agency said that tackling the criminals behind these "extremely dangerous" attempted crossings was an "operational priority" and significant resources were devoted to them.

"We are being told that those touting for these crossings are absolutely open about it", she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"We realised they were safe and sound, and the police took over", he said.
