Federal agencies directed to hold off on shutdown raises

Mike Pence and others get sweetheart pay raises while Trump stiffs federal workers: report

The raises appear to be an unintended effect of the shutdown: When lawmakers failed to pass bills December 21 to fund multiple federal agencies, they allowed an existing pay freeze to lapse. Cabinet secretaries will be given raises of about $11,000, bringing their pay to $210,000, while their deputies and other top agency administrators will be given significant raises as well.

Pence himself will now reportedly be making $243,500 a year, up from $230,700.

Cabinet secretaries, deputy secretaries and ambassadors were set to see pay increases.

Nevertheless, when freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) said of Trump Thursday night that her plan is to "impeach the motherf--er", the president took offense.

The scheduled raises appeared to be an unintended outcome of the government shutdown, The Associated Press reported.

Even though the pay for these positions has been frozen since 2013, the pay raise is not one that is likely to be politically popular, especially since a pay freeze was formalized for federal employees in the midst of an ongoing partial government shutdown that has disrupted their paychecks.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders had said earlier Friday that the administration was "aware of the issue" and "exploring options to prevent this from being implemented while some federal workers are furloughed".

India stops printing Rs 2,000 note, two years after its shock launch
Rs 2,000 notes were introduced after the government banned the old Rs 500 and the Rs 1,000 denominations on November 8, 2016. "There has been no recent decision regarding Rs 2,000 note production", Garg said in his tweet.

Without legislation, the pay freeze was set to expire and pay was set to jump automatically.

The government's Office of Personnel Management did not respond to a request for comment.

Departments were told in a memo issued Friday from the acting director of the Office of Personnel Management to hold off on enacting the raises during the partial government shutdown.

Vice President Mike Pence won't be getting his scheduled pay raise on Sunday, the Washington Post reports.

The move comes a week after Trump signed an executive order freezing non-military federal workers' 2019 pay.

Last month, Congress failed to extend the pay freeze on the raises, which would have ended effectively on Saturday and let the increases kick in.
