Two Americans accused of fighting for ISIS captured in Syria

Reports: 2 British soldiers wounded in IS attack in Syria

According to the SDF, one of the Americans is Warren Christopher Clark, 34, of Houston, Texas, also known as "Abu Mohammad al-Ameriki" among ISIS forces ("Al-Ameriki" is a surname often given to Americans recruited by terrorist groups).

In a press release on Sunday, SDF confirmed capturing the five ISIS members, saying that "They were preparing to launch attacks against the fleeing civilians from that areas" pointing out that the capture happened on December 30.

They were arrested along with suspected fighters from Ireland and Pakistan.

A Pentagon spokesman said the incident is under investigation.

The White House announced last month that ISIS had been defeated in Syria and the United States would withdraw 2,000 troops from the war-stricken nation.

Under the alias Abu Muhammad al-Ameriki, Clark had submitted an application seeking to join ISIS as an English teacher in Mosul, which had served as the Iraqi capital of ISIS's physical caliphate from summer 2014 until it was liberated by US -backed and trained Iraqi forces in summer 2017. The Washington Post quoted records from Washington University's Program on Extremism that indicated Clark traveled to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Iraq seeking work as an English teacher and was employed in that capacity at the University of Mosul when he sent his resume to ISIS.

The Americans were identified as Warren Christopher Clark (aka Abu Mohammad al-Ameriki) of Houston, and Zaid Abed al-Hamid (aka Abu Zaid al-Ameriki), originally from the USA, but no specific location was reported.

As with Clark, Al-Hamed's Arabic nom de guerre, or "kunya", contains a term traditionally used to identify Americans, but several fighters dubbed with the same term and appearing in jihadi propaganda materials since 2011 were not mentioned in the February report because their true names or backgrounds could not be verified, wrote Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens, Seamus Hughes and Bennett Clifford, the report's authors.

Another of those foreign fighters was reportedly an Irish citizen named Alexandr Ruzmatovich Bekmirazev, 45, an immigrant from Belarus who resided in Dublin until he departed for Syria in 2013.

Bolton, who traveled to Israel to reassure the US ally of the Trump-ordered withdrawal, said there is no timetable for the pullout of American forces in northeastern Syria, but insisted it's not an unlimited commitment. His fate was the subject of a months-long legal battle between the U.S. government and the American Civil Liberties Union.
