TSA Officers Get $500 Bonuses Amid Shutdown

An estimated 60 federal employees collected food there Monday afternoon, said Emily Nipps, an airport spokeswoman.

With no end in sight to the partial government shutdown, as the President has stated he is willing to keep the government shutdown for months and even years, industry officials are anxious that federal workers will be forced to find paying jobs elsewhere, leading to major staffing shortages.

Miami International Airport made a similar move on Saturday, saying one of its checkpoints at a smaller terminal would close early each day.

However, according to CNN, reports of TSA workers calling in sick due to the shutdown had already started to circulate on January 4.

The passenger had forgotten the firearm was in their carry-on luggage, the administration said, and alerted authorities upon their arrival in Japan, which maintains strict gun laws.

No-shows among screeners across the USA soared yesterday and again today, when the Transportation Security Administration reported a national absence rate of 7.6 per cent, compared with 3.2 per cent on the comparable day a year ago.

Gregory, the TSA spokesman said that was not a TSA decision.

Around 700 federal employees alone work at Tampa International Airport.

The TSA said that 7.6 percent of employees had unscheduled absences Monday morning, more than double the rate from the year before. On Friday, 5.6 per cent of the administration's 51,000 workers did not show up for work, compared with 3.3 per cent who took unscheduled absences on January 13, 2018. The figure remains a nonstarter for Democrats, leaving Congress at an impasse that triggered the partial shutdown - which has affected key parts of the federal government, including the departments of Homeland Security, Justice, Interior, State and Housing and Urban Development.

Last week, the TSA Council president for the American Federation of Government Employees said that agency workers had been suffering extreme financial hardship during the shutdown and that some employees had already walked off the job. Security standards remain in place and have not been compromised.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske also announced Friday that workers who manned checkpoints on December 22 would be paid for their work that day and would receive a bonus for working through the busy holiday season.
