Gambino crime family boss Frank Cali shot, killed

Reputed Gambino Crime Boss Frank Cali Shot Dead In Front Of Staten Island Home

Shortly after, emergency responders arrived on the scene and Cali, who was born in New York City, was transported to Staten Island University North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Gotti died while in prison in 2002 of throat cancer and Gambino died in 1976.

"The assassination of Mr. Cali came on the same day that Joseph Cammarano Jr., the reputed acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, was acquitted at trial", The New York Times reported, "and about a week after Carmine J. Persico, a longtime boss of the Colombo crime family, died in prison at age 85".

It was Rudy Giuliani's prosecution of the Gambinos and other mob families that led to his election as New York City mayor.

Cali's distraught family members rushed outside after the shooting. The elder John Gotti grandson, also named John Gotti, was arrested on drug charges in the summer of 2016 in an investigation dubbed "Operation Beach Party".

A panicked family member called 911, telling a dispatcher Cali was deliberately run over before he was shot, sources said.

Federal prosecutors referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Mafia's Gambino family, once one of the most powerful and feared crime organisations in the country.

"Even Gotti had more respect", one police source told the New York Post.

New York Police seal off the area around suspected Gambino crime boss Frank Cali's Staten Island home.

Detectives stand over body of reputed mob boss Paul Castellano, after execution on 46th St. Body of Castellano's chauffeur, Thomas Bilotti, lies partially covered in the street, far left.

The Gambino Family was once among the most powerful criminal organizations in the USA, but federal prosecutions in the 1980s and 1990s sent its top leaders to prison and diminished its reach. Sylvester Zottola, 71, reportedly of the Bonanno crime family, was gunned down at a McDonald's drive thru in the Bronx last October, according to WABC.

Cali had been considered a unifying figure in the years after John Gotti, "Dapper Don", was convicted and sent to prison by cooperating mob witnesses, WPIX reported. Today's news is a big flashback to those days.

One man collapsed in front of the home crying: 'Papa!

Cali was first reported to be in charge of the Gambino family in 2015.
