EU must increase pressure on Britain over Brexit - EU's Verhofstadt

Brexit: Second referendum, Article 50 delay, amendments and everything else that could happen tonight

On Thursday, lawmakers voted against holding a second referendum on Brexit, and for seeking an extension for the departure.

Brussels has begun preparations for a possible delay to Brexit beyond the current March 29 deadline after MPs backed an extension to the Article 50 process. On Saturday a rival "March to Leave", which will arrive in London on 29 March set off from Sunderland. In addition, in the absence of a deal, the fate of British citizens in European Union countries remains subject to each member state's rules as of the moment Brexit takes effect (with or without delay). May had to rely on Labour and other opposition votes to get it through.

Shadow housing minister Yvonne Fovargue, shadow education minister Emma Lewell-Buck, shadow business minister Justin Madders, Ruth Smeeth, a shadow ministerial aide, and Labour whip Stephanie Peacock, all quit their roles to oppose one.

Her decision to hold a third meaningful vote next week is an ultimatum for lawmakers - back her deal so that she can request a "short, technical extension" until June 30; if not, Britain will need to participate in European Parliament elections in May, or worse, risk Brexit not materialising at all.

The motion adds that any extension beyond June 30 would require the United Kingdom to hold European elections in May.

The DUP is also demanding a seat at post-Brexit trade talks as its price for supporting her deal, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

If the party whips do not think Mrs May has the numbers by tomorrow evening, her deal will not be put to a vote.

Latvian foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics suggested a delay of up to two years could be required if MPs continue to reject the Brexit deal.

Downing Street said this was a "natural consequence" of Mrs.

No 10 believes the delay to Brexit can be limited to under two months if MPs back the deal.

But, asked about the possibility of a longer delay, Coveney said: "I think many European Union leaders will be very uncomfortable with a long extension".

Over the past week, a series of Brexit votes have taken place in the Commons.

It has been a bruising week for the Prime Minister, with her Cabinet in open revolt as the focus on her leadership intensified.

Speaking to the Press and Journal, he said that if faced with a clear choice of a WTO Brexit of no Brexit at all, then MPs would vote for no Brexit at all and face a backlash.

According to the minutes, the European commission's secretary general, Martin Selmayr, who is known as a master of strategy, asked: "Imagine that they have a new Brexit secretary or prime minister - what then?" "We will have the opportunity to. secure a people's vote within a matter of days".

However MPs from Labour and the Independent Group have made it clear they plan to table another amendment on a People's Vote.
