Two US servicemembers killed in Afghanistan

Two United States service members were killed in Afghanistan, according to a statement from NATO Resolute Support in Kabul.

Having broken out in October 2001, the war on terror in Afghanistan has come at an enormous cost for the United States, costing almost $1 trillion or at least $3 billion per month, 2,278 USA military deaths, and a further 20,426 injuries. It also did not release the identities of the deceased, asserting that the names of the service members killed in action would be withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete, in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy.

The statement did not provide details on the location of combat or on what led up to the deaths.

US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad, the Trump administration's main negotiator with the Taliban, concluded earlier this month a 13-day marathon session with leaders of the insurgent group. The United States has been holding talks with the Taliban movement.

Khalilzad has said that following months of earlier talks, he reached framework agreements with the Taliban to not allow terrorist groups to use Afghanistan as a location to stage attacks on the US or USA allies.

Trump Slams Russia Probe But Says Report Should Be Public
Mueller is required to produce a confidential report that at a minimum explains decisions about who was and was not prosecuted.

The country remains on edge as winter comes to end, with warmer weather sparking the potential onset of a new fighting season as analysts warn the Taliban may increase attacks to gain leverage at the negotiating table.

More than 2,400 us military personnel have been killed and more than 20,000 have been wounded since the beginning of the Afghan War in October 2001.

The US has about 14,000 troops in Afghanistan, where they primarily advise Afghan forces battling the Taliban and the local ISIS affiliate.

The Afghan government has been excluded from peace talks because the Taliban calls it a puppet of the US government. In exchange, the USA would agree to withdrawing forces. And the United Nations said 3,804 civilians died in Afghanistan past year, more "than at any time since records have been kept".
