The suspect was apprehended as the victim was rushed to hospital in what police said to be "a minor injury and he was in stable condition". "So, I left screaming to alert the security", she said.

There is nothing to suggest the attack was linked to any political, religious or extremist group, said Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chevrefils.

Police have yet to disclose the man's identity or any possible motive for his attack, saying only that he is 26 years old and is known to police.

Vlad Cristian Eremia, who appeared in a Montreal courtroom via videoconference Saturday afternoon, is also charged with assault with a weapon for allegedly attacking the Oratory's 77-year-old rector with a knife.

Plamondon volunteers at the Oratory every Friday and told Global News she thought that attacker "was going to kneel in front of the Saint Joseph statue".

Encouraging people to pray and remain calm, Archbishop Lapine added, "Let us pray to St. Joseph and believe in peace".

Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante tweeted: "What a disgusting and inexcusable gesture that has no place in Montreal".

About two million people visit the church each year.

The Canadian Press reports Rev. Claude Grou was presiding over Mass at Montreal's St. Joseph's Oratory at the time.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante called the incident "horrible and inexcusable" and said it had no place in Montreal.
