Prosecutors to meet with Bezos in blackmail case

Walmart to Amazon's Jeff Bezos:

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is slated to meet with federal prosecutors in NY in the coming days as authorities investigate his claim Saudi Arabia tried to extort him.

The meeting signals that the USA attorney's office is escalating its inquiry connected to Bezos's suggestion that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia was behind a National Enquirer story that exposed his extramarital affair and his claim that the tabloid attempted to extort him.

The National Enquirer, which is under fire for paying hush money to a former model linked to US President Donald Trump, is on the auction block.

Bezos says the Enquirer threatened to publish explicit photographs of him unless he stopped investigating how the magazine obtained private texts between Bezos and his mistress.

Messages were sent to AMI seeking comment Thursday. The CEO in January announced his divorce from his wife of 25 years, MacKenzie Bezos, and the couple last week announced a settlement that leaves Bezos with 75 percent of their stock in the company. The Associated Press reported in February that prosecutors were looking into whether the publisher violated terms of the deal, which included a promise not to break any laws in the future.

The developments raised speculation that, behind the scenes, the military aimed to install one of its one in place of al-Bashir. Al-Bashir came to power on the back of a 1989 military coup against the democratically-elected government of Sadiq al-Mahdi.

In a statement, AMI said that a "decision has been taken to explore strategic options for its National Enquirer (US and United Kingdom editions), Globe and National Examiner brands which will result in their sale in the near future". "As of today, it is unclear to what degree, if any, AMI was aware of the details", de Becker wrote in The Daily Beast.

More recently, the National Enquirer has been embroiled in a battle with Bezos, the CEO of Amazon.com Inc and also the owner of the Washington Post.

Following the publication of de Becker's op-ed, the publisher issued a statement saying Sanchez alone was the source for its reporting. "There was no involvement by any other third party whatsoever".

Adel al-Jubeir, Saudi Arabia's former minister for foreign affairs, told CBS News that the government had "nothing to do with" the matter.

The company in October pledged to pay all of its warehouse workers at least $15 an hour, after presidential hopefuls Warren and Bernie Sanders held out Amazon workers on food stamps as an example of the need for living-wage protections.
