Family horrified after 'monster' throws boy from shopping centre balcony

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda has been charged with attacking a 5-year-old boy at the Mall of America Friday. Cops said the child fell three floors after being pushed or thrown over a railing

Bloomington police Chief Jeffrey Potts said during a news conference that the boy fell almost 40 feet after a man who apparently didn't know the boy or his family threw him off the balcony Friday.

The boy, named Landen, was apparently tossed over the railing by a man he had never met Friday morning.

Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, 24, was last night charged with attempted murder after Bloomington Police tracked him down. Charges are expected to come down Monday.

The crime has garnered national attention.

On Friday morning, Landen was thrown was grabbed and thrown almost 400 feet from the balcony onto the mall's tile flooring.

Landen has been described as the "sweetest, kindest five-year-old you will ever meet" with a soft and gentle soul and the ability to bring a smile to everyone he meets.

Potts said on Saturday there were "a lot of witnesses that were helpful" in the incident Friday.

The child sustained life-threatening injuries in the incident and was treated by witnesses and emergency services at the scene before being rushed to hospital in a critical condition. His parents have requested privacy.

"He had a peaceful sleep and is continuing to fight his courageous battle, he's a strong survivor!"

"The child did suffer significant injuries", he continued. Police say the suspect, Emmanuel Aranda, 24, is cooperating.

The Sun reports that Landen Hoffmann was left in a pool of blood after plunging to the marble ground floor in front of petrified witnesses at Minnesota's Mall of America. He was transferred to Hennepin County Jail Friday night.

In July 2015, Aranda was charged with causing damage inside stores after he threw items off the upper level of the mall to the lower level, according to court records obtained by WCCO (pdf).

Court records obtained by PEOPLE show that Aranda was convicted of fifth-degree assault and interfering with an officer of the peace, and was ordered not to return to the property for one year.

In September 2015, he admitted he was breaking an order to stay away from a Minneapolis library, where he had been arrested for smashing a computer and stalking a female employee.

The suspect has a history of misdemeanor convictions, including some cases handled through a mental health court. He was discharged from custody six months later and placed on probation.
