Weed killer firm must give U.S. cancer couple $3b

Bayer is ordered to pay $2 billion in Roundup cancer case

It was the third consecutive USA jury verdict against the company in litigation over the chemical, which Bayer acquired as part of its $63 billion purchase of Monsanto past year.

In the statement, Michael Miller, another of the Pilliods' lawyers, said their case is different from two previous Monsanto trials "where the judges severely limited the amount of plaintiffs' evidence".

We have great sympathy for Mr. and Mrs. Pilliod, but the evidence in this case was clear that both have long histories of illnesses known to be substantial risk factors for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), most National Hockey League has no known cause, and there is not reliable scientific evidence to conclude that glyphosate-based herbicides were the "but for" cause of their illnesses as the jury was required to find in this case.

The stock closed at its lowest level in nearly seven years, even though the punitive damages award is likely to be reduced due to U.S. Supreme Court rulings that limit the ratio of punitive to compensatory damages to 9:1.

The jury awarded $2.055 billion to Alva and Alberta Pilliod, a northern California couple who had used Roundup weed killer product for 35 years, the Wall Street Journal said on Monday.

EPA's conclusion is based on a database of more than 800 studies on glyphosate and Bayer's glyphosate-based herbicides that relate to human and mammalian health, and its 2017 cancer risk assessment also examined numerous studies in the open literature.

The company said both Alva and Alberta Pilliod had long histories of illnesses known to be substantial risk factors for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Reportedly, Comcast is preparing an NBC streaming service to launch sometime in 2020 at a price point below $12 per month. It will have the option to sell its 33% stake to Disney in 2024 for at least $27.5 billion, regardless of Hulu's worth.

Trump orders USTR to start process of taxing all imports from China
Liu, China's top economic official, said the country's economy was improving after bottoming out at the end of previous year . US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin shook hands with Liu as he left.

However, Monsanto has also faced accusations that it benefited from a cosy relationship with EPA officials and that it interfered with supposedly independent scientific reviews that concluded Roundup is safe.

Hardeman's lawyers said the elderly man developed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma after using Roundup to spray his properties for nearly three decades.

Glyphosate was developed by Monsanto in the United States in the 1970s and has become one of the most widely used ingredients in weed killers worldwide. "We can't do the things that we used to be able to do and we really resent Monsanto for that fact". The San Francisco groundskeeper was awarded $289 million, as the court ruled that the popular herbicide was responsible for his non-Hodgkins lymphoma. It insists that Roundup is safe to use.

The verdict came the same day that Bayer admitted that its Monsanto could have kept lists of key political figures - for or against pesticides - in European countries. They are appealing the verdicts.

In March, a jury in San Francisco awarded $80m to another Californian man after finding that Roundup had caused cancer. That was later reduced to $78 million.

"We were of the opinion that the reports of these dealings with journalists, politicians and activists are not in order and not in agreement with what Bayer stands for".

The lawsuits have battered Bayer's stock since it purchased Monsanto for $63 billion a year ago, The Associated Press reports.
